Heritage Preservation Society Records
Scope and Contents
The Heritage Preservation Society of Putnam County was organized in the fall of 1976 by individuals interested in continuing the work of the Putnam County Bicentennial Heritage Committee. Organizational meetings were held over several months, and the first formal meeting of the Society took place in January 1977. According to the Society’s bylaws, its purpose was to provide a forum for individuals interested in preserving the heritage of Putnam County, Indiana.
This collection documents the early development, activities, and accomplishments of the Heritage Preservation Society. Records reflect the Society’s research efforts related to historic streets and homes in Putnam County, including folders organized by street address or house name. Additional materials document public programs and initiatives such as the Heritage Preservation Fair, the Heritage Wall, and walking tours.
The collection includes administrative and committee records, minutes, financial records, correspondence, newsletters, grant related materials, research files, newspaper clippings, photographs, program books, and brochures. These materials illustrate the Society’s organizational operations, preservation advocacy, and community engagement efforts over time.
The records span the years 1948 to 2013, with earlier dates reflecting copied or compiled historical information used in later research activities.
The collection is generally arranged alphabetically. Files documenting research on specific streets and historic houses are grouped together for ease of reference, with remaining materials arranged alphabetically by topic.
